Shri. Sanjay Subrahmanyan [Vocalist]
Sanjay Subrahmanyan, born on 21st January 1968, a powerful and energetic singer, is an outstanding exponent of Carnatic Music, the classical music system of Southern India. His strong and vibrant voice, rich and fertile imagination and an excellent blend of tradition and modernity has helped him win a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers all over the world. His music has an endearing quality that connects him to any audience that he performs for.
Sanjay has undergone an intensive taining period of 27 years under several great musical teachers. He began by learning the violin under Shri V Lakshminarayana (better known as the father of the violin wizards L Vaidyanathan, L Subramaniam and L Shankar). He then switched to vocal music and learnt from his grand aunt Smt Rukmini Rajagopalan for a period of 10 years. A furt her 10 years were spent with Shri Calcutta KS Krishnamurthy one of the greatest teachers of Carnatic music in the late 20th century. Sanjay continues his quest for knowledge and gets guidance from Nadaswaram maestro Sembanarkoil SRD Vaidyanathan, even today at the height of his successful career. It is notable that Sanjay also qualified himself as a Cost and Chartered Accountant and gave it all up to pursue his passion for carnatic music.
Sanjay began his concert career in 1986. He has had a vast performing experience giving concerts all over India and in 20 different countries around the globe. Some of his career highlights have been
1. Regularly featured in premier organisations promoting Indian classical music all over India. Gives in excess of 20 concerts in the annual Chennai music festival in December.
2. Regular concert tours of the North American continent covering more than 50 different cities.
3. Was the first Carnatic Vocal artiste to perform twice at the prestigious Theatre De La Ville, Paris. Sanjay was also the sole representative of the Carnatic music tradition at the La Marde Musicas festival at Cartagena, Spain.
4. Exclusively records and releases many thematic and live concert cds for Charsur Digital workstation (CDW) a premier recording label specialising in Carnatic music.
5. Founded Sangeetham.com – a website dedicated to promoting Carnatic music20on the internet in 1998.
6. Received many honours and awards from many prestigious music organisations in India.
7. Was the subject of an 85 minute documentary film titled “Aaraar Aasaippadar” (Desired Melody) – by Prasanna Ramaswamy which was premiered at the Friday Features November Fest conducted by the national daily, The Hindu. The film was also screened at an international film festival in Munich, Germany in June 2007.
